iPhone 14 Pro’s Black Stainless Steel

Apple seem to have updated the way they coat the stainless steel on iPhone. Especially for the Space Gray models, which they now call Space Black again.

Previously, Apple used DLC (Diamond Like Coating) to coat their Watches and iPhone, but they stopped it in 2020.

Based on a comment on this MacRumours forum post, it seems like it’s not DLC but some other coating, since the two look and feel different.

What I am curious though, is if this process makes it to the Apple Watches and how close is it to the earlier stainless steel that informed their link bracelet design.

These days, we don’t really get a peak into Apple’s Manufacturing techniques, which have always been fascinating to watch. I wish, Apple did more of those videos.
